Helping a sick child fight their illness takes a big enough emotional toll on a family; adding a financial strain can make it all almost too much to bear. Ronald McDonald House can help address those problems, whether they involve housing that’s near a hospitalized child, the expense of staying together in another city or even getting basic medical or dental care in a vulnerable community.
RMH Ottawa is a 14-room house that provides temporary residence to over 500 families per year with critically ill children needing treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Families are provided with a private, uniquely designed bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and have access to a large fully equipped kitchen and no-charge laundry facilities. The house is part of a network of 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada dedicated to providing care for children with critical illnesses and their families.
It costs RMH roughly $90 per night to accommodate one family. Families, however, are only asked to contribute $10 per night towards this expense. No family is ever turned away due to their inability to pay; it is the seriousness of the child’s diagnosis and the availability of rooms that are the deciding factors.
How Can We Help ?
Each year Ronald McDonald House needs to raise over $200,000 dollars to supplement the expenses of supporting the 500 plus families that come through it’s doors. RMH also needs to supply kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and playrooms so that when families arrive they don’t have anything to worry about.
In the coming months EMCO Ottawa will be collecting donations as well as items on the attached “Wish List” for donation to the RMH in Ottawa. In addition to this we will be looking at setting up promotions/events to raise as much money as we can for the children and their families at RMH.
Let’s show our community that we care, that we want to give back to those in need and that we always have more to give.
Teddy Bear Program
Ronald McDonald House Ottawa welcomes families with sick children from communities outside of Ottawa from Northern and Eastern Ontario. Often families arrive having had very little time to bring anything other than what is absolutely necessary. This means sometimes a favorite toy of a sick child is left behind.
It is Ronald McDonald House’s goal to make sure that there is a ‘Welcome Teddy’ in each of the 14 rooms to be a gift for the sick child. With your help we can ensure that a NEW teddy bear will always be on hand, waiting to comfort and become a sick child’s best friend.
Please bring in any NEW stuffed toys to be donated to this cause.
Gift cards in increments of $10.00 dollars are given out to families in need and considered to be a big help.
